We invite students to participate in Valga Museum's educational programmes.
Please register for the classes at least 5 working days in advance. For more information and booking, kindly contact by E-mail: karin@valgamuuseum.ee. The language of instruction in the classes is Estonian; if necessary, you should arrange interpretation into other languages yourself.

SEASONAL CLASSES:
MICHAELMAS grade 1-4
Michaelmas marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter. In the past, it was a major holiday. Outdoor work was finished, and indoor work began. In the Michaemas class, we talk about old customs and traditions. Games are played and crafts are made.
ALL SOULS' DAY grade 1-4
All Souls' Day is a quiet day, and no work is done. Not even speaking loudly is allowed. Candles are lit in memory of the departed. In the class, you'll hear more interesting facts about All Souls' Day. Stories are listened to, and drawings are made.
MARTINMAS grade 1-4
By Martinmas, autumn work should be completed. Then it was time to celebrate. People dressed as Martinmas beggars and went house to house wishing Martinmas luck and singing songs. In the class, you'll hear more about Martinmas customs, crafts are made, and songs are sung.
SAINT CATHERINE'S DAY grade 1-4
How do Martinmas and St Catherine's Day differ? The answer can be found in the museum class. You'll hear various legends about St Catherine's Day. Drawings are made, and tasks are solved.
SAINT LUCY'S DAY grade 1-4
Saint Lucy was a girl who regained her sight while praying. In the class, you'll hear more about St Lucy, and a St Lucy's crown is crafted.
SAINT THOMAS' DAY grade 1-4
Saint Thomas' Day marks the beginning of the Christmas season. A major cleaning is done, and preparations for Christmas begin. In the class, you'll hear more interesting facts about At Thomas' Day and craft an Ash-Thomas.
CANDLEMAS grade 1-4
Candlemas celebrates the end of Christmas and the anticipation of spring. In the class, you'll learn what else is done on Candlemas.
EASTER grade 1-4
Easter, Resurrection Sunday, Pascha - why does this holiday have so many names? The answer can be found in the museum class. Games are played, and crafts are made.
WALPURGIS NIGHT grade 1-4
Spring is here. Is Walpurgis Night really a witches' holiday? Crafts are made, songs are sung, and dances are danced.

PERMANENTLY OFFERED CLASSES:
Museum is fun!
Target group: kindergarten groups (children aged 2 - 6 years) and 1st grade
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: museum class with exciting interludes - children explore the museum through games and active participation, understand how to behave in a museum as a public space, and develop cooperation and listening skills. Children listen and play along. In attention games, acquired new knowledge is checked.

Historical Sources - What Are They?
Target group: 5th grade
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: learning about different historical sources and the museum as a place where they are preserved. The class also shows some of the more interesting exhibits from the Valga Museum collections. We explore the items in the museum's storage and their storage conditions.

Archaeology is Cool
Target group: 6th grade
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: introduction to archaeology, the most important archaeological finds from Valga, life in an ancient fortress.

The Golden Middle Ages
Target group: 1st - 9th grade
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: We talk about the Middle Ages - how people dressed, how they spent their time, how they made music, what instruments they played. You can see old flutes and try playing them.

Target group: 1st - 7th grade
Duration: 45 minutes
In the class, old pictures of school life are viewed and compared with today. Children learn what was leart in the past and how it was taught. Did all children go to school, what did children do after school, did they have to study at home - all these questions are answered in the class. At the end of the class, worksheets are used to reinforce the knowledge.

Valga as a Railway Town
Target group: 8th - 9th grade, suitable also for high school level
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: the class follows the development of Valga town at the end of the 19th century - early 20th century. To a lesser extent, the general development of Estonian towns during this period is discussed. The narrow-gauge railway network of Estonia is introduced. In the second half of the class, we discuss the state of railways in today's Estonia. At the end of the class, students fill out a worksheet and submit it to their teacher.

The Year-Round Work of Peasants
Target group: upper primary school, also suitable as a reminder for high school level.
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: we learn about the main works of peasants throughout the year based on the folk calendar, and we also get acquainted with old tools.

Life in Valga During the German Occupation 1941 – 1944
Target group: 9th grade, high school level
Duration: 45 minutes
Class content: In the class, we get acquainted with the survival of ordinary people during the difficult war years. We observe how direct warfare reached the town and county of Valga, what restrictions were imposed here, how German soldiers treated ordinary local people, and how the latter received them, etc. The class also shows utility items from the war years from the Valga Museum collections. At the end of the class, we fill out a worksheet.

Paju Battle
Target group: upper primary school, secondary and upper secondary school classes
Class duration: 45 min
The class takes place depending on the number of students, either in the library or in the gallery in the form of a lecture supported by a PowerPoint presentation. It covers the general situation before the battle, events leading up to the battle, a more detailed account of the battle and its course, the results of the battle, the liberation of Valga town, etc. At the end of the class, we visit the museum's War of Independence corner.

Stefan Batory
Target group: upper primary school, secondary and upper secondary school classes
Class duration: 45 min
The class takes place depending on the number of students, either in the library or in the gallery in the form of a lecture supported by a PowerPoint presentation. It covers Stefan Batory's origin, youth, and activities before becoming King of Poland, the story of becoming king, activities as king during the Livonian War and after the war, granting town rights to the sity of Valga, his death, and the commemoration of his memory, etc.

Valga as a County Center
Target group: upper primary school, secondary and upper secondary school classes
Class duration: 45 min
The class takes place depending on the number of students, either in the library or in the gallery in the form of a lecture supported by a PowerPoint presentation. It covers the development of Estonia's county division from ancient times, the events and developments leading to the creation of counties (kreises), and the most important historical figures (Catherine II, George Browne), an overview of the initial role of the county and mandatory buildings, the content of counties during the tsarist era, between the two world wars, during the Soviet period, and in present-day Estonia.

Traffic Management Through History
Target group: upper primary school, secondary and upper secondary school classes
Class duration: 45 min
The class takes place depending on the number of students, either in the library or in the gallery in the form of a lecture supported by a PowerPoint presentation. Students are activated in a question-answer format. Historical traffic and transport modes are covered from ancient times. An overview of transport modes (land, sea, air, and pipeline) is given. Public transport, its nature, and role. Right and left-hand traffic. Transport options in Valga. Possible developments in the future.

Livonia and the Livonians
Target group: grade 7-9

What is Livonia? Is Livonia a country or a land? Does Livonia have its own flag, coat of arms, and anthem? You will find the answers in the museum class. We also hear how the Livonian language sounds and sing songs in Livonian.
